Ocean towage (also known as Sea Towage) is any towing operation where the duration of the voyage, or the duration between designated ports of refuge or safe anchorage points, is in excess of 24 hours (taking weather conditions into account).

Towing tugs are specially designed & equipped, with either a basic towing hook, or more commonly, dedicated towing winch or winches.

More sophisticated towing tugs will also have Tugger winches, shark jaws etc.

Ocean Towing Tugs are normally selected by their Bollard Pull, which ranges from as low as 15t for very small tugs to well over 350t for the bigger Ocean Going Tugs, used for rigmoves etc
